Shri Bawa Lal Dayal Ji Maharaj was born in Kasur, a town in the Lahore district of undivided India. Born into a Hindu Kshatriya family, his birth date was recorded in the Bikrami calendar as the second day (Dooj) of the bright fortnight in the Magh month of the year 1412.

His father, Shri Bhola Mal, worked as a Patwari for the Turk Emperor. His mother, Smt. Krishna Devi, was a deeply religious woman who taught him about God. At the young age of 5, he met Shri Chetanya Swami Ji Maharaj, who taught him the true path of a saint and accepted him as his disciple. Under his Guru's guidance, he traveled the world dedicating his life to deep meditation (Tapasya) and spiritual practices (Yog Sadhana).

He is respectfully known by many names, including Paramhans Yogiraj Vaishnavacharya Satguru Bawa Lal Dayal Ji Maharaj, Bawa Ji, Pir Baba, Lal Pir, and Yogiraj.

After his long spiritual journeys, he chose to settle in Dhianpur (near Batala in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab). According to historical records, he lived for 300 years, from 1412 to 1712 Bikrami Samat, before leaving for his heavenly abode.

श्री बावा लाल दयाल जी महाराज का जन्म अविभाजित भारत के लाहौर जिले के कसूर नामक शहर में एक हिंदू क्षत्रिय परिवार में हुआ था। विक्रमी कैलेंडर के अनुसार, उनका जन्म वर्ष 1412 के माघ महीने के शुक्ल पक्ष की द्वितीया (दूज) को हुआ था।

उनके पिता, श्री भोला मल, तुर्क सम्राट के लिए एक पटवारी के रूप में काम करते थे। उनकी माता, श्रीमती कृष्णा देवी, एक अत्यंत धार्मिक महिला थीं जिन्होंने उन्हें भगवान के बारे में सिखाया। मात्र 5 वर्ष की आयु में, वे श्री चैतन्य स्वामी जी महाराज से मिले, जिन्होंने उन्हें एक संत का सच्चा मार्ग दिखाया और उन्हें अपना शिष्य स्वीकार किया। अपने गुरु के मार्गदर्शन में, उन्होंने दुनिया भर की यात्रा की और अपना जीवन गहन ध्यान (तपस्या) और आध्यात्मिक प्रथाओं (योग साधना) को समर्पित कर दिया।

उन्हें सम्मानपूर्वक कई नामों से जाना जाता है, जिनमें परमहंस योगीराज वैष्णवाचार्य सतगुरु बावा लाल दयाल जी महाराज, बावा जी, पीर बाबा, लाल पीर और योगीराज शामिल हैं।

अपनी लंबी आध्यात्मिक यात्राओं के बाद, उन्होंने धियानपुर (पंजाब के गुरदासपुर जिले में बटाला के पास) में बसने का फैसला किया। ऐतिहासिक अभिलेखों के अनुसार, स्वर्ग सिधारने से पहले वे 1412 से 1712 विक्रमी संवत तक, 300 वर्षों तक जीवित रहे।
